THE CAPE FLORAL KINGDOM IS ONE OF SIX FLORAL KINGDOMS IN THE WORLD
It is the smallest and richest. There are 9600 plant species in the Cape Floral Kingdom, which is more than can be found in the whole of the Northen hemisphere.
There are 3 main types of vegetation: fynbos, which means fine bush;
renosterveld named after the rhinoceros which once roamed freely through it, and Karoo succulents.
This biodiversity, which is threatend by modern living is being actively preserved by the South African Biodiversity and Wine Initiative. 95% of South African wine is produced within the Cape Floral Kingdom, and our wine is as diverse and exciting as the natural environment in which it is created.
The very best time to see the wonderful proteas, ericacae and other plants in bloom is from August to December, and April to May. However Stephan knows the mountains so well, he can find flower gems (and wildlife) at any time of the year.
